Saraki, others pick seats in Kwara
HE Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday said the Peoples Democratic Party won the three senatorial and five House of Representatives seats in Kwara State. The Chief Returning Officer, Dr. Steven Olajide, declared that Kwara State Governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki; won the Senate seat in Kwara Central with 98,799 votes, while the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Dr. Oloriegbe Ibrahim,, polled 53,056 votes. The candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Bukayyah Isa, came third with 32,494 votes. Olajide also said 498,499 voters registered for the election in the district while the total number of votes cast was 185,844. Out of this, 175,052 were valid votes and 10,787 were rejected. Senator Simon Ajibola was declared the winner of the senatorial election in Kwara South, having defeated the candidates of ACN and ACPN, Mr. Anu Ibiwoye and Mr. Lola Ashiru respectively. In Kwara North, the PDP candidate and former governor of the state, Senator Mohammed Lafiaji, was declared the winner, having polled 6,822 votes as against the candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, Yinusa Yahaya, who scored 4,218 and Yamman Abdulahi of ACPN with 2035 votes. Dr. Rafiu Ibrahim of the PDP won the Ofa-Oyun-Ifelodun Federal Constituency. There was no election in Irepodun/Isin/Ekiti/Oke-Ero Federal Constituency as the logo of the Democratic Peoples Party was said to have been inadvertently omitted. The election is scheduled to hold with the governorship and state houses of assembly election on April 26. But in Ilorin West and Asa Federal Constituency, the candidate of the PDP, Mr. Mashood Mustapha, was declared the winner, having scored 44,170 votes to defeat his closest opponent, the ACN candidate, Alhaji Jidda AbdulRasak, who scored 29,634. The ACPN candidate, Mr. Duro Sulaiman got 17,388. In Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Smart Adeyemi (PDP) polled 84,511 while Joseph Faniyi of CPC got 35,281 votes. In the Kabba-Bunu Federal Constituency, Tajudeen Yussuf of the PDP polled 22,183 to defeat Dino Melaye of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, who got 18,214. Alhaji Buba Jubril of polled 29,728 to defeat Mr. Shabba Ibrahim (PDP), who polled 19,793 ballots to win the Lokoja/Koton Karfe Federal Constituency seat. Also Dr. Ali Ahmad of PDP won the Ilorin East and South Federal Constituency with 31,163 votes. The ACN candidate, Hajia Biliksu Oniyangi, scored 19,771. In Baruti-Kaima Federal Constituency, Zakari Mohammed of PDP was declared winner, while Haman Patigi of the same party also won in Edu-Patigi-Moro constituency. Meanwhile the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mamman Tsafe, has said that 23 people were arrested for various offences during the election. According to him, the suspects were political thugs said to have been ‘imported’ from Lagos to disrupt the election.
