We’re not Against Unionism – VC, AKSU
The Vice-Chancellor, Akwa Ibom State
University, Prof. Sunday Peters, has said that the university is not
against unionism, but that it only seeks an understanding with Nigerian
Labour Congress to allow it to be fully established before union
activities can take place.
Peters said this in Uyo on Saturday when
reacting to an allegation by the NLC, Akwa Ibom State Chairman, Mr.
Uyime Usoro, that the university is anti-unionism.
He said, “We are not against unionism as
the NLC chairman alleges. What we want is for the institution to be
fully established before any union activity can take place. We cannot be
struggling with having the programmes accredited and at the same time
be fully engaged in union activism.
“The university and the government are
not against unions, but what we are asking them is to give us a chance
to be fully established.
“We are not depriving our members of our staff their welfare.”
