ASUU strike: Group Urges Jonathan To Seek NASS’s Nod To Borrow N92bn
As a way out of the lingering face off between the Federal Government and striking university lecturers, a group, Anti-Corruption Network (ACN), has asked President Goodluck Jonathan, to write the National Assembly and seek for permission to source N92 billion to honour government’s agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU.)
The group which said...........
it could understand how a government that can spend money on frivolities and other things could not source for funds to honour bond it entered into, and gave government a week of grace to resolve the industrial dispute.
Executive Secretary of the group, Dino Melaye, told the Nigerian Tribune, in Abuja, that the organisation was ready to mobilise citizens to protest if the dispute was not settled after the ultimatum.
He expressed disappointment at what he described as government’s lukewarm attitude towards restoring normalcy to the education sector and maintained that the government’s attitude showed that it has no interest for the future generation.
Melaye recalled that the government recently secured a loan of $1.1 billion from China for some capital projects and wondered why it would only opt for endless lamentations over lack of funds at this time.
He said, “The ongoing face-off between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, is a reflection of bad government and keeping quiet, would be like the proverbial adult who while at home, allowed the she-goat to suffer the pains of parturition on its tether.
“The Federal Government as far back as 2009 went into an agreement with ASUU and signed that agreement. Why will you agree to what you don’t intend to do? A gentleman will go into an agreement and then carry out the agreement to a logical end.”
“The agreement was made in 2009; why was there no budgetary provision for that agreement in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013?
“Why would the Federal Government enter into an agreement they don’t intend to implement? So, we are giving them one week of grace,” he said.
