Chelsea Have Edge Over Arsenal – Azpilicueta
Cesar Azpilicueta believes that Chelsea’s League Cup win over Arsenal shows that his side are in a better position to challenge for the Premier League title than their London rivals.
The Spanish full-back scored his first Chelsea goal to open the scoring at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, with Juan Mata adding a second as Jose Mourinho’s team swept into the quarter-finals.
Arsenal currently lead second-place Chelsea by two points at the top of the league table, but the visitors dominated the fourth-round tie despite Mourinho having made 10 changes to his starting line-up.
Asked if the result demonstrated the difference in quality between the two sides, Azpilicueta said: “Yes. We felt really confident on the pitch and did a very good game.
“We controlled most of the game. We had two or three more chances but the feeling inside of us was that we were dominating Arsenal in their stadium and they are top of the table, so it’s very nice.”
Arsenal have now lost consecutive home games, having previously been beaten 2-1 by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
They face a daunting succession of matches at home to Liverpool, away to Dortmund, and away to Manchester United, but Azpilicueta says his side can only concentrate on their own form.
“Arsenal now have two really hard games but we don’t need to look at other teams. We need to keep working,” said the the former Marseille player.
“We are improving in every game and this is the most important thing. We are growing up as a team. We are in second, two points less than Arsenal, and we’re now going to try and get up to first.
“We play in a difficult stadium as well in Newcastle on Saturday. It’s always hard there. This league is really competitive.”
